May is perhaps the best time to visit Rome – spring is in full bloom, temperatures are pleasant, and the city still doesn't have too many tourists. In this guide you'll discover which clothes to pack, what to wear for walks, visits to the Vatican and Colosseum, and how to prepare stylishly and comfortably for the May sun, without excess baggage. And all of this – with attention to Roman aesthetics and practicality.

In another article I shared the best things to do in Rome in May. Today I'm sharing the best things to pack for Rome in May, so you feel comfortable and look stylish.

In this packing list for Rome in May I describe in detail what you need and what you don't, so you can minimize luggage size without compromising comfort and style.

How Hot Is Rome in May?

In May, Rome's weather is mild and warm. In May you'll see a slow but steady temperature increase day after day, and how hot you feel will depend partly on the temperature but also on where you're coming from.

Objectively speaking, you're unlikely to be very hot in Rome in May, and bringing light layers is a good way to be ready for whatever the weather brings.

Important to know! A few years ago Rome was hit by a crazy cold front in May and people had to pull out coats and scarves. This was an exceptional event and made national news: you don't usually need to pack winter clothes for Rome in May, but of course check the weather forecast at the last minute in case something like that happens again!

What Clothes to Pack for Rome in May?

Like the rest of Italy, Rome is known for its style, but you don't need to spend on the latest designer clothes to feel like a local.

Romans are practical above all else. The city is stunning, but most streets are cobblestoned, which makes getting around difficult, so be prepared.

I'll go into more detail later in the article, but when packing for Rome in May:

  • Choose comfortable walking shoes with rubber soles. They'll provide comfort while sightseeing
  • Save space in your luggage and leave high heels at home
  • Pack only basic clothes and enhance them with accessories. Choose well-fitted jeans or pants, tailored skirts, chinos, or polos. Good quality clothes are more important than the brand.
  • Choose a nice top for more formal evenings out and pair it with a necklace or blazer. You don't need to wear your best formal dress unless you're going to a wedding or special event.
  • Bring clothes in light colors like light pink, white, cream, mustard yellow, red, navy blue - they all work well. Black for evening is also always a good option.

Here are the key items in my wardrobe for Rome in May

    • Quality jeans/pants - jeans are very common in Rome and worn by people of almost any age. However, people over 50 usually prefer pants in different materials, as they give a more refined look. If you choose jeans, I recommend adopting the Italian way and choosing well-fitted ones. On the other hand, your worn, baggy jeans that may not look that great but are comfortable aren't as versatile and will make you stand out in many places. Kids can wear jeans as well as sportier clothes. The latter aren't ideal for evenings out, but in most places no one will pay attention to them. Personally, I prefer soft-waist chino-style pants for boys and baggy pants for girls. During the hottest hours of the day, kids can wear shorts. Important to know! Sweatsuit tops are not considered appropriate daywear for adults. Italians prefer jeans/chinos for a casual look, and athletic wear is only for sports.
    • Short-sleeved tops - these will be your main daytime clothes. My favorite travel item is a nice top that can be worn both day and night. This can be a simple black, navy, or gray top, a shiny one, or a shirt or polo for men. You don't need very fancy clothes in Rome, just know that anything in the "business casual" style will work.

  • Everyday dress - I love wearing dresses when traveling. My favorite types are simple dresses. In May in Rome you may not yet be able to wear sandals, but you usually have no problem with bare legs.
  • Good crossbody bag - the best bag for Rome is a medium-sized crossbody bag. Choose one that's big enough for daily essentials but not so big that it's too heavy and gets in the way when visiting museums. Make sure it's large enough to hold your wallet, documents, phone charger and camera, and ideally a reusable water bottle and guidebook. I don't think an anti-theft bag is necessary in Rome, especially if you're used to big cities. However, make sure your bag closes well and keep it close to you at all times.
  • Light jacket - in early May you may still need a light jacket. I especially recommend it for people used to very hot weather. If you're coming from a colder climate, you probably won't need it! Italian women at this time often wear beautiful spring jackets, often as an alternative to vests.
  • One vest - vests are great for May in Rome. I usually only wear one, which I put on when I get cold.
  • Scarves - scarves are perhaps the most widely used fashion items in Italy. Especially in spring, women use them everywhere for warmth and as a fashion accessory. Therefore, I recommend choosing a scarf large enough to provide warmth in case of a temperature drop.
  • Sunglasses - Italians love sunglasses and think of them as a fashion accessory, but they're essential if you're visiting Rome in May because of the sun.
  • Necklaces - it may sound funny, but necklaces can change your look and are a good way to give everyday outfits a more elegant appearance for evening. They're also a very "Italian" thing if you want to feel like a local: bold, colorful necklaces are popular in spring.
  • Comfortable shoes - Rome is best explored on foot and a good pair of walking shoes is essential. Go for closed-toe shoes - May in Rome still isn't sandal weather. Choose shoes with rubber soles - they'll protect you from the hard cobblestones and prevent slipping in case of rain. Choose sneakers (but not fitness ones) or walking shoes, not full hiking boots (too heavy and unusual for the city). While sneakers and canvas shoes are perfect in Rome, athletic ones with bright colors and a fitness look will make you stand out and won't be considered appropriate for anything other than the most casual restaurant. Unless you really love heels, you don't need to pack them for Rome or Italy in general - flats are fine.

What to Wear to Visit the Colosseum in May

The Colosseum and Roman Forum are outdoor archaeological sites with uneven terrain in most areas.

There's no dress code to access them, but comfortable shoes are mandatory. Avoid heels or shoes that could cause blisters or slipping. Most of the area is essentially a park - dress appropriately and make sure you have sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat during the hottest hours of the day.

  • Necklaces to make your outfits more interesting - Italian women love necklaces!
  • Sun hat - you'll look like a tourist, but it'll save you from sunstroke!
  • Earrings, again popular Italian fashion
  • Scarf - for warmth and looks
  • Eye mask for the plane
  • Travel pillow for the plane
