October is one of the best months to visit Rome – the weather is pleasant, there are fewer tourists, and the atmosphere is authentically Roman. Whether you're strolling through the ancient forum, having lunch in the sun, or visiting the Vatican, proper clothing matters.

In this article you'll discover what to pack in your suitcase, how to combine comfort with style, and which clothes meet the dress code for sacred places.

Largely an autumn month, October is no longer characterized by the scorching heat of Rome's summer.

However, it's still mild and dry enough to allow pleasant sightseeing and lunch outdoors (dinner is less likely, it gets cooler after the sun sets).

October days are special. So special that locals have a name for them - "Ottobrate Romane," something like an Indian summer in the city and the last summer joy before the weather starts to cool and winter comes.

Overall, in October in Rome you can expect mixed weather, so bring different types of clothes - short and long sleeves, thinner and thicker layers.

This is my packing list to help you decide what to wear in Rome in October and pack smartly and efficiently for your autumn trip to the Eternal City.

What's the Weather Like in Rome in October?

In October you can expect Rome temperatures to be moderate, with days alternating between sunny and rainy, and you'll wear a coat: usually mid-day you can take it off completely, but in the evening you'll need to wear a jacket and possibly a scarf.

Therefore, when packing for Rome in October, I recommend paying attention to two things: different types of clothes and at least two pairs of shoes.

Different types of clothes will be useful during long days out when you won't return to your Rome hotel between sightseeing and dinner, and spare shoes will be invaluable when rain in the Italian capital soaks you to the bone.

Rome doesn't rain very often, but when it does, the rain pours! Having an extra pair of shoes at the hotel to wear while the first pair dries will be invaluable.

Is Rome Cold in October?

No, October in Rome is an autumn month with mild temperatures. You'll need a jacket and light scarf, especially for evening, but overall you're unlikely to be cold.

Is Rome Hot in October?

No, October isn't a summer month and you won't be able to wear shorts or summer clothes. However, you can wear short-sleeved tops, at least on the nicer, warmer days.

What Clothes to Wear in Rome in October?

When packing for Rome in October, I recommend bringing the following:

  • Underwear and socks
  • Short-sleeved tops (unlikely you'll walk around in short sleeves, but you can wear them under a vest)
  • Long-sleeved tops
  • Vest
  • Mid-season jacket, ideally water-resistant
  • Tights if you plan to wear a dress/skirt
  • Knee-length skirt/dress
  • Jeans/long pants (cotton or chinos are suitable)
  • Long-sleeved shirt for men
  • Polo for men
  • Long pants for men
  • Sleepwear (pajamas, nightgown: cotton or similar is suitable, doesn't need to be fleece, but not summer pajamas either)
  • Blazer for men (for smart casual daytime look or for dinner)
  • Light scarf - Italians love scarves! I wear one all the time. In October you still don't need a very warm wool scarf, but you'll want a lighter one both for warmth and as a fashion accessory! When making a list of things to pack for Rome in October, this is a must-have!

Women's style tip: A popular look for women in Rome in autumn that can be comfortable and stylish for travel is to combine pants with a long-sleeved top and a short-sleeved sweater on top. This is a popular all-day look.

Men's style tip: Men in Rome love polo shirts for casual wear and blazers for more elegant occasions, paired with chinos or similar pants. Unless you're going to a very elegant restaurant, you don't usually need a tie in Rome.

A mid-season jacket and light scarf for Rome in autumn and no jacket during the hottest hours of the day will work wonders.

Outerwear

October is very tricky when it comes to choosing a coat, as temperature and rain seem to require different types of clothing.

Temperature-wise, the best type of coat for October in Rome is a cape or mid-season down jacket.

Rain-wise, you'll need some kind of poncho (you'll be cold if you only wear that) or a suitably thick jacket (too warm for the weather).

The easiest way I've found to balance temperature and rain when packing for Rome in autumn is to pack different types of clothes.

I usually bring a leather jacket or down jacket, both excellent for travel as they easily fold to small sizes, and I also bring a rain jacket that I can wear when it rains.

Best Shoes for Autumn in Rome

You don't want to bring many pairs of shoes, but in this packing list for Rome in October I've included more than one pair, as I believe you'll happily swap one for another.

Specifically, I recommend packing:

  • One pair of comfortable walking shoes like sneakers or ankle boots
  • A second pair of walking shoes in case the first pair gets wet in the rain
  • A third pair of nicer shoes, like ballet flats, for evening outings
  • For men I recommend fashionable sneakers or Camper-style walking shoes for walks and a nicer pair of shoes for evenings out
  • I also recommend bringing a pair of flip-flops or any indoor shoes for the hotel.

Good idea: For women I really like foldable ballet flats. They're super easy to carry and are perfect to pair with an outfit for evening outings, while taking up almost no space in your luggage. They're flat and not suitable for extended walking, but will serve you well if you find your sneakers too hot.

What to Pack for October in Rome: Essentials

  • Travel documents (passport, visa if needed)

  • Copy of all your reservations/travel plans (many operators require a paper copy)
  • Crossbody bag
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Phone and charger
  • Adapter
  • Extra phone battery (especially if you take lots of photos)
  • Camera if different from your phone + extra memory cards
  • Italian phrasebook

Accessories, Toiletries, and Nice-to-Have Items

The accessories I recommend for Rome are:

  • Sunglasses - October still has several very sunny days, plus they're an essential Italian accessory!
  • Light scarf - to look stylish but also for cooler hours of the day
  • Hair ties
  • Necklaces. Italian women love necklaces!
  • Easy-to-fold rain jacket
  • Headphones
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, body/hair lotion / deodorant / tweezers / comb and brush / face and body moisturizers / sunscreen / feminine hygiene products / perfume / makeup / shaving cream, razors and accessories, etc.)

What to Pack for Rome in October with Kids

  • Baby carrier
  • Stroller that's suitable for Rome's cobblestone streets
  • Rain cover for baby carrier/stroller
  • Change of shoes for rainy days
  • Well-stocked diaper bag
  • Sleepwear
  • Daytime clothes: onesies, overalls, long pants, long-sleeved top, sweater
  • Mid-season jacket (no winter jacket needed)
  • Hat (for both sun and cold)
  • Sippy cup
  • Pacifier
  • Travel toys (stacking cups, sticker books, etc.)
  • Stuffed toy/teddy bear

Particularly warm clothes aren't usually needed for kids at this time, but I think a warm sleeping bag for the stroller can be useful, especially in later hours of the day or early morning.

What to Wear to Visit the Vatican in October

One of the biggest concerns when deciding what to wear in Rome comes with visiting the Vatican.

The Vatican really does have a dress code and it's enforced: people who don't comply are turned back, regardless of having tickets (the dress code also applies to museums) or having waited in a long line.

>>> See the Vatican dress code and tips on what to wear to visit here. <<<

This can be very stressful and I know it causes anxiety, as it may seem that the decision whether to admit you to the Vatican is subjective.

Fortunately, this isn't the case. Dressing for the Vatican in October isn't difficult though, as the season is on your side.

To make sure you're admitted, choose long pants or a below-the-knee skirt with tights, avoid deep necklines and any clothing that could be considered offensive.

Be careful with clothes with slogans, as well as tattoos, as they can also be grounds for being turned back, depending on the message they carry.

I hope this packing list has been helpful and has helped you figure out what to wear in Rome in October.
