How the Roma Pass calculator works
This calculator compares the cost of buying your Rome attraction tickets individually with the cost of using a Roma Pass 48H or Roma Pass 72H.
Start by selecting the attractions you genuinely plan to visit. Then choose the public transport ticket you would otherwise buy and tell the calculator how many days you expect to spend visiting the selected attractions.
The calculation uses:
- Standard adult admission prices for each attraction.
- Roma Pass reduced admission prices where a participating attraction offers a reduced rate after your included admissions have been used.
- Included admissions: one eligible admission with the Roma Pass 48H and two eligible admissions with the Roma Pass 72H.
- Public transport costs, comparing the transport included with the Roma Pass against the ticket or pass you said you would otherwise buy.
- Mandatory booking or reservation fees where they still apply to Roma Pass holders.
The calculator automatically allocates the included Roma Pass admission or admissions to the eligible attractions where they create the greatest saving. You do not need to visit those attractions first.
For combined museum or archaeological circuits, the calculator treats the circuit as one admission where that matches the Roma Pass rules. For example, the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are treated as one combined attraction.
The result is an estimate for a standard adult visitor. If you qualify for free or reduced admission because of your age, nationality, disability status or another concession, your actual saving may be different.
Roma Pass 48H vs 72H
The two Roma Pass versions work differently, so the cheapest option depends on both the attractions you plan to visit and the length of your itinerary.

The more expensive 72H card is not automatically better. If one high-value attraction accounts for most of your saving, the 48H version can still be the cheaper option even when you visit several museums.

The calculator uses the current standard admission and Roma Pass treatment stored in our manually maintained dataset. Temporary exhibitions, special events and separately ticketed experiences can change the amount you actually pay.
What isn’t included in the Roma Pass?
Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel
The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are not included in the Roma Pass 48H or 72H.
That does not mean you should leave them out of the calculator. If the Vatican Museums are part of your itinerary, select them as normal. Their individual admission cost is added to every relevant scenario, so the calculator can still compare your complete Rome sightseeing budget accurately.
For example, if you plan to visit the Vatican Museums plus several Roma Pass attractions, the Vatican ticket remains an additional cost whether you buy a Roma Pass or not.
The calculator also excludes separately ticketed upgrades, special experiences and temporary exhibitions unless they are specifically included in the attraction data. Examples can include premium Colosseum experiences, special evening openings and separately ticketed exhibition spaces.
When is the Roma Pass worth it?
The Roma Pass tends to become more attractive when your itinerary combines high-value participating attractions with public transport.
A typical situation where the pass can work well is when you:
- Plan to visit the Colosseum and several other participating museums or archaeological sites.
- Can use your included admission on an attraction where it creates a substantial saving.
- Will continue visiting participating attractions at the Roma Pass reduced rate.
- Would otherwise buy a 48-hour or 72-hour Rome public transport pass.
The pass is less likely to save money when your itinerary contains only one inexpensive participating attraction, when most of your planned visits are not covered by the Roma Pass, or when you intend to walk rather than use much public transport.
This is why a generic answer to “Is the Roma Pass worth it?” is not particularly useful. The answer depends on the exact attractions and transport you plan to use.
The calculator is designed to make that decision using your actual itinerary rather than a theoretical list of everything the pass could include.
Important Roma Pass reservation rules
A Roma Pass can cover or reduce the admission price without removing the need to reserve a time slot. Check the rules for the attractions you actually plan to visit.
Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill – reservation required
A timed-entry reservation is required for the Colosseum, including for Roma Pass holders. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are treated as one combined Roma Pass admission.
The calculator covers ordinary Colosseum admission. Arena, Underground, Attic and other premium or Full Experience upgrades are not included in the standard calculation.
Borghese Gallery – reservation required
Reservation is mandatory for all Borghese Gallery visits, including Roma Pass holders. Because entry is strictly timed and availability can sell out, it is sensible to check reservation availability before relying on the Roma Pass for this attraction.
Online reservation methods can also carry a service fee, depending on how the booking is made.
Castel Sant’Angelo – advance booking recommended
Advance booking is recommended but is not normally mandatory for individual visitors. Roma Pass holders can use the appropriate Roma Pass access procedure when visiting.
Capitoline Museums – advance booking optional
Advance booking is optional for individual visitors. Buying an advance ticket can carry a presale fee, while a same-day ticket-office purchase may avoid that additional charge.
Baths of Caracalla – reservation normally not required
Advance reservation is not normally required for standard admission. Special events, exhibitions or separately ticketed experiences may operate under different rules.
Reservation requirements can change, particularly during busy periods or temporary exhibitions, so always check the attraction’s official booking information before your visit.

This calculator is manually maintained rather than relying on estimated ticket prices or automatically scraped third-party listings.
We primarily use official attraction websites, official Roma Pass information and official Rome public transport sources when maintaining the dataset.

- The standard adult admission price.
- Any standard booking fee used in the calculation.
- Whether the attraction participates in the Roma Pass.
- Whether it is eligible for an included admission.
- The applicable Roma Pass reduced admission price.
- Any Roma Pass booking or reservation fee.
- Whether advance reservation is required.
- Combined-admission rules where several sites count as one Roma Pass entry.
- The official source used to verify the information.
- The date the data was last checked.
Roma Pass prices, attraction tariffs and reservation procedures can change. Temporary exhibitions can also increase the normal admission price at individual museums.
For that reason, the calculator includes verification dates and can exclude stale attraction data rather than allowing outdated prices to influence the recommendation.
Important: third-party booking websites may charge more than the official admission price because of reservation, service or convenience fees. The calculator uses the official or lowest legitimate standard admission cost for the comparison, while booking links may display a different live selling price.
