Italian rail operator Trenitalia is set to introduce updated luggage regulations for its high-speed Frecce trains, following the hasty suspension of the original rules last week amid public criticism. The revised baggage restrictions are expected to be implemented before the Easter holidays and will impact passengers traveling on the Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, and Frecciabianca trains.
Under the new rules, Frecce passengers will be permitted to carry a maximum of two suitcases. In the event that a passenger brings a third suitcase, they will not be subject to a surcharge but will instead face a fine. While the exact amount has not been announced, it is expected to be significantly lower than the initially proposed €50, with Corriere della Sera reporting that the fine is likely to be around €10.
The size limits for luggage, which are yet to be disclosed, will be consistent across both first and second class, unlike the original rules that proposed two different sets of luggage restrictions based on the class of travel. In addition to the two allowed suitcases, passengers will be able to bring a bag, backpack, personal effects, and a stroller.
Trenitalia plans to inform passengers of the new luggage rules prior to ticket purchase to ensure that travelers are well-informed about the restrictions and potential fines.
The original rules were scheduled to take effect on March 1st but were suspended at the last minute following an outcry from consumer associations, politicians, and the general public. Subsequently, representatives from Trenitalia and consumer groups met to discuss the matter, with the latter declaring that both parties are now in “full harmony” regarding the revised rules, according to Corriere della Sera.
As the implementation of the new luggage regulations draws near, passengers planning to travel on Trenitalia’s high-speed Frecce trains should stay informed about the specific details of the rules to avoid any potential fines or inconveniences during their journey.
