As the world prepares to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on March 17th, the city of Rome is gearing up for a series of events and activities to honor Ireland’s patron saint. From sports tournaments to cultural gatherings and traditional Irish pubs, there’s something for everyone in the Eternal City.
Kicking off the festivities on Saturday, March 9th, is the Cormac Cup, a Gaelic football tournament organized by Rome Hibernia GAA. The event will feature both male and female teams from Rome and Milan, competing at the Centro Sportivo Certosa starting at 9:00 AM.
On Sunday, March 10th, the embassy of Ireland, in partnership with Retake Roma, has organized the Rome Verde Clean Up. Participants will meet at Piramide Cestia at 11:00 AM to contribute to urban renewal by “greening” a corner of Rome. Later that day, the Casa della Cultura irlandese will host a Pop-up Gaeltacht with Bingo at the Druid’s Den pub from 6:30 PM. Irish-language speakers of all levels are welcome, with Irish-themed prizes up for grabs.
The Irish Club of Rome will host a St Patrick’s Day party on Saturday, March 16th, from 8:00 PM at Lyo on Corso Vittorio Emanule. The event promises an evening filled with music, dancing, and revelry, and is open to all. Tickets can be reserved until March 11th via Eventbrite.
For those looking to celebrate with a pint of Guinness, Rome’s best Irish pubs include Scholars Lounge, which will feature six live bands throughout the day followed by two DJ sets, as well as Camden Town, the Druid’s Den, the Fiddler’s Elbow, Finnegan’s, and The Shamrock, all located in the city center. The final round of the Six Nations rugby tournament, with Ireland facing Scotland on March 16th, will add to the excitement in these pubs over the St Patrick’s weekend.
On St Patrick’s Day itself, a Mass for Lá Fhéile Pádraig will be held at St Patrick’s Church on Via Boncompagni 31 at 10:30 AM. The event welcomes all and sees Rome’s Irish community and friends of Ireland unite in a nostalgic chorus of “Hail Glorious, St Patrick” each year.
With a wide array of events and activities, Rome offers a fantastic opportunity to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and immerse oneself in Irish culture and traditions.
