You can get from Ciampino airport (official name Rome–Ciampino International Airport “G. B. Pastine”) to Rome by bus, shuttle, train and metro, private transfer, and taxi. You can also rent a car which I wouldn’t recommend if you plan to spend most of your time in the Eternal City.

In the article below I will discuss the pros and cons of each method of transportation and which one is cheapest, fast, and more convenient.
Ciampino airport (IATA airport code CIA) is located in the town of Ciampino, a suburb of Rome, Italy, approximately 7.5 miles southeast of the city center.
Ciampino is the smaller of the two airports (Fiumicino airport is the bigger one). It primarily serves as a low-cost carrier and regional airport, handling both commercial airline traffic and military operations.
Ciampino has a single passenger terminal equipped with basic amenities like shops, cafes, and car rental services. That makes it so that you can get in and out of the airport pretty fast.
Ciampino airport mainly caters to budget airlines and charter flights. You can see a list of all airlines that fly out of Ciampino at https://www.adr.it/web/aeroporti-di-roma-en/pax-cia-airlines.
The official website of the airport is https://www.adr.it/web/aeroporti-di-roma-en/pax-cia-ciampino.
Ciampino is not a 24/7 airport. It is open between 4 am – 12 am. If your flight to the airport is delayed and it is scheduled to arrive after the closing hours, your airplane will be rerouted to land at another airport.
Keep that in mind when reserving a private transfer or rental car in advance and make sure that you can cancel the reservation and get a refund.
How to Get from Ciampino Airport to Rome by Bus
There is no direct bus service between Ciampino Airport and Termini Station. The bus service operated by ATAC, which is the local public transportation company in Rome, provides bus services connecting Ciampino Airport to subway stations of Metro Line A and B where you need to transfer to the subway to get to Rome.
ATAC Bus Service to Subway Stations of Metro Line A and B
ATAC operates two bus lines, 520 and 720, but they don’t directly connect Ciampino Airport to Rome but to a metro/subway station.
Bus 520 connects the airport to the Cinecittà and Subaugusta metro stations (Line A). Bus 720 connects to the Laurentina metro station (Line B).
To learn more about Rome’s Metro – the three lines (A, B, and C), their stations, train schedules, and ticket fares, visit https://howdyeurope.com/italy/rome/rome-subway/.
To get to the bus stop, after you leave the airport, continue straight ahead and the bus stop will be on your left. If you can’t find it, ask the Carabinieri outside of the airport.
The ATAC bus service is perfect for those whose accommodation is near the subway stations of Metro Line A and B.
The ticket price as of writing this article is 1.5 euros. It’s called a BIT Ticket (Biglietto Integrato a Tempo) and it’s valid for 100 minutes from the time you validate it. Once you’re at a subway/metro station, you can transfer to Metro Line A or B without needing a new ticket, as long as you’re within the 100-minute window.
Just make sure to validate your ticket when you first board the bus at Ciampino airport. When you transfer to the metro, you’ll need to insert the same ticket at the metro turnstile for access.
The BIT ticket must be purchased prior to boarding the bus (bus drivers don’t sell tickets). ATAC tickets can be purchased from the yellow and blue vending machines with the ATAC logo on them inside Ciampino Airport.
Trenitalia Ciampino Airlink
The Trenitalia Ciampino Airlink provides a convenient and affordable transport option between Ciampino Airport and Rome’s Termini Railway Station. Operated jointly by the national rail company Trenitalia and the bus company ATRAL, it combines a short shuttle bus ride from the airport with a direct train trip right into the center of Rome.
When taking the Ciampino Airlink, travelers first board a dedicated ATRAL bus outside the Ciampino terminal. This bus heads straight to Ciampino Railway Station, without making any intermediate stops along the 10-minute journey. At Ciampino Station, passengers transfer directly onto a Trenitalia local train, which makes the 30-minute trip to Rome Termini Station along commuter rail lines. The total travel time averages 40-50 minutes, depending on connections.
A major plus of the Ciampino Airlink is its affordability. At just €2.70 each way, it’s one of the cheapest and most budget-friendly options for getting into central Rome from the airport. It also runs frequently, with buses every 20 minutes and regular train departures all day. With reputable operators, modern vehicles, and direct connections, it’s generally a comfortable and reliable service as well. The only downsides may be potential waiting times at transfers and inconvenience for travelers with extensive luggage.

Fixed fares (each way) for some destinations, including all supplements, are as follows: Rome city center (within the Aurelian Walls) – € 31 per taxi (not per person). The fixed taxi fare can be found on the front passenger door as well as on the back of the front passenger seat.
Within the Aurelian Walls refers to a specific zone inside the historical center of Rome. Unlike taxis, private car services offer safety car seats but you have to request them when you are booking the service.
Another benefit of the private car service between Ciampino Airport and Rome is that it will pick you up at the airport and drop you off at the address in Rome where you are staying.
The private car service between Ciampino Airport and Rome can be booked online in advance from places like GetYourGuide.com. You can check out two such services here and here.
The price of the private driver service is determined by the address of the final destination and the number of passengers and can vary greatly from one company to the next.
The private car service is perfect for:
- Large groups or families – The private car service offers a range of vehicles including vans that can accommodate larger groups or families traveling together.
- Travelers with small children – Unlike taxis, private car services provide child safety seats upon request, making them a good option for families with young kids.
- Travelers wanting more luxury/comfort – The text mentions private car services offer more luxurious vehicle options than standard taxis. This would appeal to travelers seeking a higher-end and comfortable ride.
- Travelers prioritizing convenience – Being picked up and dropped off directly at your accommodation, without having to walk or take public transportation, is very convenient.
- Travelers with a lot of luggage – Not having to navigate public transportation and walk far distances makes private car service easier for travelers with heavy or multiple luggage.
